HERE WE ARE NOW, ENTERTAIN US - NEVERMIND 20TH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE

Everybody was talking about it, twitters and facebook status exploded on Nirvana's Nevermind album anniversary. With reason because this album openend the mainstream door for many alternative rockbands. My favorite venue, Trix put a Nevermind tribute evening on their calendar with some of Belgium's best rock bands. Time to mosh!

Nier Van A

Nier Van A is a Nirvana tribute band. I hate tribute bands and i think it should be forbidden... i really do... is it the lack of inspiration?
But Nier Van A goes way beyond the tribute, they bring back Kurt and his territorial pissers in a magical way like Kurt never died. A perfect mixture of insanity and chaos. I find it really scary that Nier Van A comes so close to the real thing, must be cosmic or something. For those who missed them, to bad because they won't perfom again and died this evening the most beautiful dead...

The Rott Childs

Did i ever saw a bad concert of these guys? Negative! So you can say they rule? YES!!!

Kapitan Korsakov is a noise-rock band from Ghent, Belgium. It was already 2 years ago since i've seen the band live on stage, now i know i should be ashamed. Their headbanging punk attitude was the start of a more than perfect tribute night. Kinda missed the smashing guitars but i guess that's part of the economical recession. Once again they rocked, big time!

Tweak bird are a garage-fuzzed-out-psyched-rock duo. They played a great set altough snare drum probs and near the end a bit of a mess but it seemed like it was supposed to be that way. Awesome version of the bones, great tunes from their tweak bird album ... The electricity filled the air and buzzed the eardrums!

The Bellrays are a us garage rockband combined with the soul voice of Lisa Kekaula. Yesterday they played their set the way rock 'n roll was meant to be. Pure straightforward energy that made me forgive Lisa's Basement Jaxx adventure... Blast of a concert and ready for some more!

Eddie Spaghetti

Eddie Spaghetti, bass and leadsinger from The Supersuckers opened the Bellrays concert with an accoustic solo-set. The guy is an entertainer and knows how to play with the crowd and his lyrics by times are hilarious but honestly... his country - folkish music doesn't work for me, got bored pretty soon.

Lokerse Feesten is a 10-day festival at Lokeren, Belgium. A yearly tradition for me, i guess it must have been my 20th time or somewhat i got there. My next stop: Tuesday with the great stoners: Kyuss Lives!!

OMD

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are a synthpop group from England. I have to admit at the age of 16 i was completely into the new wave culture and freaked out more than once on their songs like Enola gay and electricity but that's already a while ago. Can't say it was a great set neither that it s*cked. To much flatlined and to much efforts from Andy McCluskey trying to encourage the crowd. It was more than obvious the crowd came to see Roger Daltrey since half of them left before OMD... The 80's were good but they're gone.

Roger Daltrey

Roger Harry Daltrey is an English singer, best known as the founder and lead singer of English rock band The Who. Tonight they were supposed to play the rock opera Tommy but due to time shedule they mixed it up with a best of... i did not complain. It started slow but went on in a set i was happy to be there. I guess Roger must have some voice problems because at times he really slipped over it but i forgive easely. I'm sure die-hard fans were satisfied but i missed a bit of punch, maybe i watched to much guitar smashing vids of the band...

Daan is a Belgian artist from Antwerp, Belgium. Yesterday he played the simple tour, a remake of his most famous songs in a more softly version. I find it always a pleasure to see the lovely Isolde Lasoen on stage and i'm sure most of the male present do too. But to be hounest, in general the simple tour is not really a festival thing. The audience got a bit bored halfway the set and lost their focus on the band. Pitty because i experienced the simple tour in a place with a perfect ambient and got shivered all over...

Yuko is a Indie/folk/pop band from Belgium and tipped to be belgium's next big thing. Catchy dreamy and melancholic melodies on a danceable beat or as they say: ‘childlike innocence: naïve but never stupid, charming but never banal’. Unfortunately didn't stay the whole show... got hit by the alcohol demons on the head... Ouch...

The Rott Childs

The Rott Childs are a noise/punk band from Belgium. They released their debut album Riches Will Come Thy Way early July. Live pushing the boundaries of every eardrum and kicking the bollocks untill you beg for more, dont say i didn't warned ya! A threatening bass, nasty riffs and a deadly drum are the perfect coctail for this insane combo that reinvented Tinitus! Or just Tuppence-R-Tuppence.

Nier - Van - A

Nier - Van - A is a Nirvana tribute band from Antwerp, Belgium formed by members of Deadsets and the drummer of The Hickey Underworld. I was lucky to see Nirvana once as support-act at Ghent... Cobain smashed his guitar to the stage and a piece of it hitted a guy at his head. Just to say that a tribute band is not the real thing... but damned, what is saw and heard yesterday came more than close. Nier - Van - A brings the attitude of a legend in a way it made me nailed to the ground. They play on saturday, 10 september on the big stage of Antwerp Open Air. A must experience!!!

Dottir Slonza

Dottir Slonza is a band from Antwerp, Belgium containing 3 female voices, ukelele, xylofone, organ, basstuba, drums and yet it's not Folkmusic... call it heavenly angels with a mission chased by the drums of mister animal Boots. Gently but straightforward flaoting on hypnotising rhythms with the imploring melodic female voices. How else would you describe a band like this?

Bed Rugs

Bed Rugs are a Indie/pop band with a touch of psychedellica from Antwerp, Belgium. Formerly Known as The Porn Bloopers but due to some bandname copyright changed to Bed Rugs. They played an energetic live set, a little to much "ooh - ooh - aah - aah" to my musical taste but the crowd liked it and that's what counts. Altough they impressed me a lot with their last song called "Shoe", it had just that litlle more Psyche in it.

True Champions Ride On Speed

TCROS are a math/postrock band from Antwerp, Belgium. Released last year their self-titled debut album and recommanded to all postrock fans! Opening a festival is always a bummer, playing a set for 10 people is not a motivation to give yourself completely... Needs a little more "growed" in their live act but a band with a future.

ROCK HERK 2011

Rock Herk is a free festival in Limburg, Belgium. The festival has two stages, The mainstage and the hardcore stage and is located in the Olmenhof park. A perfect opportunity for the music fans to see exclusive shows and for others a perfect chance to discover. I had a great time altough the typical belgian summer spoiled some of the fun. But hey, seeing Swans was an highlight in my festivalsummer, so thank You ROCK HERK and maybe till next year!!!

Blood Red Shoes

Blood Red Shoes are an alt-rock duo from Brighton, UK. Always a pleasant to see the lovely Laura-Mary Carter on stage, leading her guitar into a 90s influenced melody-driven sound. Fifth time already i saw the band and they keep holding my attention. The energetic up-tempo play from Steven Ansell on the drums always gives me a good feel... but this time i left after 30minutes, soaking wet clothes from the rain pushed me into an unpleasant cold feel and it was time for me to drive home. Next year, i'll probably be back.

Swans

Swans are a postpunk/noise band from New York, USA. The absolute highlight of Rock Herk 2011! Fronted by Michael Gira, the band hypnotised the audience like no other band did that day. An exclusive 2 hours set, builded layer upon layer with Michaels droning baritone sparkling the magic into the rainy night. He even threw a little raindance upon the weather demons but nobody couldn't care less. The beauty of Swans translated in powerfull volume, memorable. Got shivered, and not from the cold night. SWANS are not dead indeed!

A Place To Bury Strangers (APTBS)

A Place To Bury Strangers are a noise/shoegaze band from New York, USA. A personal favorite band but always dangerous to see them live because their music requires a perfect mixing on the PA without losing the entity of their songs. I prefer to see them in a club rather than a festival where mostly their sound gets drowned in an undefinable noisefuzz that kills the eardrums whitout knowing what song you're listening to. This time it was pretty okay, the voice of Oliver Ackermann didn't get lost in the noise-swamp, maybe a bit to present for an APTBS set but pretty enjoyable.

Two Gallants

Two Gallants is a folk/americana rock duo from California, USA. Great rawness in the voice on strong melodies but way to polished, lost my attention after 4 songs... time to enjoy a cold beer in real glass at the press area...

The Sore Losers

The Sore Losers are a Rock/garage band from Belgium. Can't remember how many times i saw them already but it is always fun to see them play. Straight forward no-nonsense rock fronted by Jan Straetemans and driven by the guitar fetishist Cedric Maes (RIP El Guapo Stuntteam). A well played energetic set, altough their feedback p*ssed off the weather demons and it started pouring rain... it should have been gasoline...

Kingdom

Kingdom is a sludge/metal band from Belgium, formed by members from Amenra and The Black Heart Rebellion. The only band i wanted to see on the hardcore stage simply because i'm not into the genre. But Kingdom is not Hardcore, slowburning riffs with a sludgy edge. First time i saw them and only could see the first three songs because i had to get back to the mainstage... What i heard was not bad but it is hard to judge only on 3 songs. There will be a next time for me to watch the whole show.

And So I Watch You From Afar (ASIWYFA)

And So I Watch You From Afar are a post/math - rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Known for their explosive live sets which they proved on the Rock Herk festival. ‘D Is For Django The Bastard’ was the audience's wake-up call on an early afternoon, a promise that Rock Herk would be a great party...

The Pogues are a punk-folk band from London, UK and inventors of the celtic punk. Guided by Shane MacGowan, the nightmare for every mother in law and a praise for the alcohol industry, but the guy is talented in his own way. Seeing The Pogues makes you feel being the Irish Rover sitting in a pub drinking away the economical and political b*llsh*t and only care about the whiskey in the jar.
Or the say it in MacGowans'style:

Dinosaur JR

Dinosaur JR is an alternative rock band from Massachusetts, USA and a great inspiration for bands formed in the late 80's and begin 90's. Their unique powerful often very distorted noise/sound can be considered a milestone in the alternative rock scene, a sound that was picked up by bands like Pixies and Nirvana.
Tonight they played the album "Bug" the Masics-Barlow style. It missed a bit of power in the beginning, due to Masics' voice slip-overs altough near the end i saw and heared the real dinosaur again realizing the dream ended to soon.

Drums Are For Parades

Drums Are For Parades are a power-rock band from Ghent, Belgium. Another great talented band from Belgium that understands the true power of a live set. A mixture of metal, punkcore drowned in a noisy juice which kicks the bollocks in the throath, even when you don't have 'em. They kill the 100dB rule in a way it was supposed to be. Hell Yeah!

To much deja-vue feel altough i threw my fists in the air with the birth, shool classic. Just to get the feel i was at a concert...

De Brassers

De Brassers are a post - punkband from belgium. The band started in the late 70's and gained fame in the belgian cultscene with the single En Toen Was Er Niets Meer. Occasionally touring. Seeing a concert of them brings back the memories of annoying my parents with volume 10 to let them know Julio Iglesias and Demis Rousos belonged in a gay-parade and not on the f*cking radio... aah, sweet memories...

Boris

Boris is an experimental noise/psyche/metal/doom band from Japan named after the Melvin's "Bullhead". Often compared with Sonic Youth but to me it is only true for a couple of their songs. A large variety of genres passing on their way (they released an album with Merzbow, toured with NiN, composed a song for a Jim Jarmusch film...) so fitting them into comparison would be to hard for them. It was a pleasure to see them live altough most of the audience left after 45 min... At the very moment i'm still wondering why... Do i have to doubt my musical taste? I never got bored. Was it to difficult to understand? They only thing i know this show was a killer and the people i talked after the show all agreed. So people who left early: I think you've missed a great opportunity. One minus: never sell your albums on a concert for 30 euro when people can buy for 15 euro on the internet...
Check them at the Dour Festival on July,17th and please confirm me my doubts, + or -!

Russian Circles

Russian Circles are a post - rock/metal trio from Chicago, US. Second time i saw them on stage and it was even bettter than the first time. A perfect balanced mixture of stoner / psychedellica dipped in a melancholic inferno. The interaction of guitar and percussions communicate in a more kinda sensitive way without the usual exploding ends that is common to the genre. But that doesn't mean it's flatlined, not at all!
A must check at the Dour festival, July 17th!

The Ocean

The Ocean is an experimental post-metal band from Berlin, Germany. A weird combination of prog - hardcore which they describes as “ambient soundtrack doomrock”. I did not know the band but was pretty surprised, floating between agressive and dreamy passages which made it well captivated. When you're into the genre, check them at Dour festival 17th July!

Red Fang

Red Fang are a stoner/grunge/psych metal band with a touch of sludge from Portland, US. It's hard to fit these beer drinking hellraisers into one style but one thing is clear, they create their own. The hilarious musicvideos directed by Whitey McConnaughy (Jackass, Band of horses, flogging Molly, Turbonegro, the gossip...) are a huge hit on the internet so time to see and hear them live on stage. A nasty, brutish bass-heavy slow burner reminded me of an early Soundgarden, altough the melodic muscular voice fired the set up into more solid stoner. The crowd enjoyed it as much as i did. 30 minutes is way to short, a warming up wich left me with 3 words: "i want more..."
I predict the band a famous future, keep an eye on their calendar somewhere november, Belgium.

Mono

Mono is a post-rock band from Japan. 3rd time tonight i've got the shivers, as a post-rock fan i only could enjoy the dreamy guitars that drove mono to stereo in the typical Mono wall of noise sound. With Steve Albini as producer they create a majestic musical universe in another dimension. The intensity of their play was touchable for every second. The album Hymn to the Immortal Wind keeps spinning on the turntable this very moment. Period.

Flying Horseman

Flying Horseman is an experimental/post folk/blues band from Antwerp, Belgium. Belgium got musical talent, lots of musical talent. One of those is the flying horseman, the dark hypnotic voice of singer Bert Dockx lifts the music to the higher level and by times reminded me of 16 horsepower. But that was a personal feel. I really enjoyed the perfect mixture of music and voices (Loesje and Martha Maieu from Blackie & Oohoos as background singers.). By times very chaotic but with a purpose, the purpose that there is nothing wrong with going deep.

Low Vertical

Low Vertical is an electronic / indie rockband from Bruges, Belgium. Often compared with Radiohead in times of OK Computer but the band goes way beyond that. More experimental, sometimes chaotic, at moments very fragile. A bit of shame of the annoying electrical/mechanical distortions at the end of the concert but a great experience to hear/feel/see.

What can i say... As a musicloving photographer i always try to "shoot" people the way they are in the best possible way. Mister Glenn hates photographers because photos can't lie,they show the way u are... before the gig started i had to meet up with the tourmanager, the only thing he did was threatening me he would sue my balls off if ever 1 picture was posted by me on the internet. With a bodyguard the size of a bulldozer next to me, i only could keep my mouth shut but boiled inside. I came up with a creative idea on the pictures, wondering if they would sue me and for what reason. Freedom of rock 'n roll equals freedom of art!!!
And the show? I was to frustrated to enjoy...

Second time this month i saw Hellsonics, a punk - metal - psychobilly band from Antwerp. A bit less powerfull but still tearing of “el sonido del diablo" in a steamy Trix bar. Headlining at Rodeofest, 23-08-011, Antwerp. C ya there!

Quest for Fire is a psychedelic rock band from Canada. Their second album, Lights from Paradise, is one of my favourite albums released in 2010. Last night was my first encounter with their smashing sound on stage... still got the buzz in the ears so i guess you can say they rocked!

Craig Ward (ex dEUS, Love Substitutes, Kiss My Jazz, True Bypass, ...) and Bootsie Butsenzeller's (DAAU, Traktor, Dóttir Slonza, Kapitein Winokio,....) casual musical relationship has been taking place in Butsenzeller's humble homestudio since early 2007. They both found a soulmate and mutual schredder in bassplayer Zahnoun Ben Younes (Pawlowski, Eat Lions, Rottchilds). Who joined them instantly for groovy, edgy, intense live shows ! They found their mutual musical loves and put them into the recorder: Shellacian edgyness, Beefheartian madness and progressions like King Crimson.

Sought-after Welsh rock trio The Joy Formidable are the latest act to sign to Canvasback Music/Atlantic Records. The label will release the band's full- length debut in early 2011. The Joy Formidable’s eight-song EP "A Balloon Called Moaning" has won them critical praise from a variety of outlets, including the NME, who have consistently raved about the band's style of "grungey pop [that] is sure to win over swathes of converts." SPIN called the release "ambitious," noting: "drenched in fuzzy bass, propelled by...driving percussion… the album transforms ear-stabbing reverb into something pretty, airy, girly and sometimes dark."
